Colorado skin works hard: high-altitude UV, dry mountain air, and year-round wind and sun all accelerate oxidative stress. Every Desert Glow Ranch salve is built around ingredients naturally rich in antioxidants — vitamins A, C, and E, plus the polyphenols and flavonoids in our tea infusions, cacao, and wild-foraged Rocky Mountain botanicals. Here's the research behind each one.

Why Antioxidants Matter

Free radicals from UV, wind, and pollution drive oxidative stress — a major contributor to visible skin aging. A landmark dermatology study found that a stabilized topical vitamin C + E + ferulic acid formulation gave measurable protection against UV-induced skin damage (Lin et al., J Am Acad Dermatol). We don't add ferulic acid directly — but it occurs naturally as the plant compound that vanilla beans convert into vanillin, so trace amounts are already part of the Madagascar vanilla in every salve we make. Vitamin C and E, the other two players in that study, are exactly what our tea infusions and vitamin E oil provide.

Vitamin E & Vitamin C: The Skin's Antioxidant Duo

Every salve includes vitamin E, and our tea infusions contribute natural vitamin C. Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute documents vitamin E's role protecting skin cell membranes from oxidative damage (Linus Pauling Institute), while the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology outlines topical vitamin C's role defending skin against environmental stress (JCAD).

Tea Polyphenols: Green, White & Rooibos

Tea isn't there for scent alone. A review in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity details how green tea polyphenols protect against UV-driven oxidative damage (Oyetakin-White et al., 2012), and separate research confirms green tea polyphenols support skin's defenses against sun and environmental stress (Katiyar & Elmets, 2001). White tea has its own dedicated research: a comparative study measured its phenolic and antioxidant content directly rather than assuming it behaves like green tea (Unachukwu et al., 2010, Journal of Food Science) — and it's worth correcting a claim that circulates often: head-to-head lab studies actually show green tea testing higher in total antioxidant activity than white tea, not the other way around, though white tea still brings real, independently-measured antioxidant value of its own. And rooibos carries a heritage angle the others don't: the Khoisan and San peoples of South Africa, rooibos's original knowledge-holders, traditionally mixed rooibos with fat into a topical skin ointment long before anyone bottled it as tea (National Geographic).

Cacao & Coffee Bean Oils

Cocoa is naturally high in flavanols. In a controlled study in The Journal of Nutrition, participants with higher long-term cocoa flavanol intake showed measurably improved skin condition and photoprotection against UV-induced redness (Heinrich et al., J Nutr) — a finding echoed in a broader review of cocoa's bioactive compounds and skin benefits (Nutrients / PMC review).

Rocky Mountain Prickly Pear & Juniper Berries

Both are wild-foraged directly from Colorado's Rocky Mountains. In a controlled human study, cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) supplementation lowered oxidative stress markers as effectively as vitamin C supplementation (cactus pear vs. vitamin C, human study). Our juniper berries are air-dried over several weeks until every trace of moisture is gone, then ground — we don't use distilled juniper essential oil. That distinction matters scientifically: a study testing the whole dried berries themselves (not the oil) found real antioxidant activity from their flavonoid content, plus measurable antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus (flavonoid, antioxidant & antimicrobial activity of Juniperus communis berries) — research on the actual form we use, not a different extraction method. Ours comes from one especially generous shrub on our land that's earned its own nickname — "The Mother" — for just how full and abundant it is every season.

Juniper's Natural Antibacterial Edge

That same berry study found juniper's antibacterial activity was bacteriostatic (it slows bacterial growth rather than killing on contact) and specific to Gram-positive bacteria — the type most associated with congested or blemish-prone skin (Juniperus communis berry extract study). Separately, juniper berry essential oil (a different, more concentrated extraction than what we use) has shown its own antibacterial and antioxidant activity in other lab studies (Antimicrobial activity of juniper berry essential oil, Antibacterial and antifungal activity of juniper berry oil), which is consistent with what the whole dried berries carry, just at a different concentration. It's part of why botanical skincare has turned to juniper for generations — not just folklore, but a natural compound doing what natural compounds do.

Moringa Oil: The “Tree of Life”

Moringa (Moringa oleifera) has been called the “tree of life” or “miracle tree” across the cultures that have relied on it for generations, and modern research is catching up to why. A clinical study of a moringa seed oil formulation found antioxidant activity comparable to vitamin E in lab testing, and a 32-person trial found skin hydration increased significantly — up to 85% over baseline — after four weeks of twice-daily use, with no reported irritation (Moringa oleifera seed oil, skin hydration & antioxidant study). It's one of the cold-pressed oils behind our Wild Mountain Glow salve, and the same plant shows up as chocolate moringa tea in Mocha Glow.

Meadowfoam Oil: Nature's Most Stable Oil

Meadowfoam (Limnanthes alba) is a wildflower that thrives in cool, wet climates — its native range runs from northern California up into Oregon and as far as Vancouver Island, British Columbia, with commercial cultivation centered in Oregon's Willamette Valley. What makes its seed oil unusual is chemical: over 98% long-chain fatty acids give it exceptional resistance to oxidation, making it, by some measures, one of the most stable plant-based oils known (Limnanthes alba, growing range & oil stability) — and rich in its own antioxidants besides. It's a fitting match for a brand built around slow, un-rushed extraction.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A Concentrated Source of Squalene

Squalene — the antioxidant lipid your own skin naturally produces — also shows up in a handful of plant oils, and extra virgin olive oil is one of the richest sources of it: a 2025 review measured EVOO's squalene content at roughly 15 times higher than the other oils it was compared against, alongside real moisturizing and antioxidant activity (Warias & Kurkiewicz-Piotrowska, 2025, Dietetics). It's worth noting this is squalene in its natural form, not squalane (the more common, shelf-stable version used in most commercial skincare) — the hydrogenation process that makes squalane so stable also strips out some of squalene's natural antimicrobial activity (Owen, 2000, Food and Chemical Toxicology).

Calendula & Rosehip Oil

A systematic review in Wound Repair and Regeneration evaluated calendula extract specifically for wound-healing and skin-calming properties (Givol et al., 2019). A 2024 review of rosehip-based dermatological products outlines the science behind rosehip oil's vitamin content and its role supporting skin elasticity and barrier function (rosehip oil review, 2024).

The Foundation: What's in Every Tin

A few ingredients show up in all three salves, and they're worth knowing about on their own. Every batch is built on vitamin E, Madagascar vanilla bean infused in jojoba oil for eight-plus weeks, triple-filtered beeswax, and mango & kokum butters — the shared foundation underneath whichever botanical blend you choose.

Ferulic Acid: The Quiet Multiplier

Ferulic acid deserves its own spotlight, not just a mention in the study above. On its own, it's a potent antioxidant — but its real claim to fame is what it does for other antioxidants. The original research on this compound found that adding ferulic acid to a vitamin C and E solution didn't just add its own benefit — it stabilized the whole formula and doubled its photoprotection for skin compared to vitamin C and E alone (Ferulic acid stabilizes vitamins C & E and doubles photoprotection). We don't add it separately; it's naturally present in the Madagascar vanilla bean infused into every salve, since it's the exact plant compound that vanilla converts into vanillin (vanillin formation from ferulic acid in Vanilla planifolia).

Beeswax: The Skin's Natural Barrier

Beeswax isn't just a thickener. A 2023 review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that beeswax functions as both an occlusive and a humectant — forming a barrier that measurably reduces transepidermal water loss while helping the skin hold onto moisture, with supportive evidence for calming irritated or reactive skin (Nong et al., 2023, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology). We use triple-filtered, cosmetic-grade beeswax specifically: the multi-stage filtration process strains out hive debris, pollen, and propolis — a common allergen — leaving a cleaner wax with a smoother, more consistent texture in the finished salve (beeswax filtration for personal care, manufacturing guide). It's a big part of why these salves feel protective, not just moisturizing.

Mango & Kokum Butters: Rich, Stable Emollients

Mango seed butter is predominantly oleic and stearic acid — a fatty acid profile confirmed by lab analysis and one reason it behaves as such a rich, skin-friendly emollient. That same analysis measured natural tocopherols — vitamin E — in mango seed fat directly (mango seed fatty acid & tocopherol composition study). Kokum butter shares that stearic-and-oleic backbone (roughly 49% and 34% respectively) but brings unusually high oxidative stability of its own, along with a lighter, faster-absorbing feel than most plant butters — research describes it as penetrating well while helping strengthen the skin's natural barrier (kokum butter composition & skin benefits overview). Industry clinical testing on kokum butter formulations has also found measurable improvements in skin moisturization and elasticity over an unformulated base, along with reduced water loss and a less greasy feel (Hallstar Beauty, kokum butter clinical testing). Mango butter's vitamin E content is well documented in the literature. Kokum's specific vitamin content hasn't been separately confirmed in peer-reviewed research, so we don't make that claim about it. Together the two butters are why the salves melt in rather than sit on top.

Why We Never Rush It: The Science of Cold Infusion

Every salve starts with a five-week infusion held below 70°F (our Madagascar vanilla infuses in jojoba oil for eight-plus weeks) — that soak is where the real extraction happens, with zero heat involved. Heat only enters the picture at final assembly: we gently melt the beeswax first, then the butters, and reduce the heat before the cold-infused oils go in last — a brief, lowered-heat step just to bring everything together, not to extract anything. That sequencing matters because heat speeds extraction but degrades the same antioxidants we're preserving: a 2025 review notes that prolonged heat above roughly 80°C causes oxidative degradation of heat-sensitive compounds like vitamin C, polyphenols, and essential oils (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2025). Keeping the actual infusion cold, and keeping the final warm step brief and low-temperature, protects those compounds through both stages. Vanillin, vanilla's primary compound, carries its own documented antioxidant activity (Tai et al., Food Chemistry, J Agric Food Chem), and eight-plus weeks lets it fully infuse before that final gentle blend.

How We Talk About This (and Why)

We say our salves are “rich in antioxidants” and “help protect skin from oxidative stress” — not “reverses aging” or “erases wrinkles.” That's not just caution: FDA rules allow cosmetics to make claims about appearance and about what an ingredient is naturally rich in, but claims about changing skin's structure or function cross into drug-claim territory requiring a different approval process (FDA guidance). We'd rather tell you what's backed by real research than oversell it.
