Frequently Asked Questions
What is a salve — and how is it different from lotion?
Desert Glow Ranch salves are concentrated, water-free botanical moisturizers. Unlike traditional lotions (which are mostly water), our salves are made entirely of slow-infused oils, nutrient-rich butters, and triple-filtered beeswax.
They don't evaporate off your skin. They help seal hydration in — which is especially important in dry climates.
Think of it as a highly concentrated daily moisturizer. Start with a small amount-a little goes a long way.
How do I use Desert Glow Ranch Salves?
Using clean hands, glide a small amount from the tin and warm between fingertips. Massage into damp skin to help seal in hydration and enhance absorption.
May also be applied to dry skin wherever nourishment is needed.
Use on face, hands, neck, cuticles — or anywhere you would normally reach for lotion.
Because these are concentrated botanical treatments, you may find you need less than expected while still enjoying lasting hydration.
Why are oil-based moisturizers better for dry climates?
In arid or high-altitude environments, water-based lotions can evaporate quickly — sometimes leaving skin feeling drier than before.
Because our formulas are anhydrous (water-free), they help reinforce the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss instead of contributing to evaporation.
Born in the high desert. Formulated to support skin anywhere dryness lives.
Will your salves clog my pores?
Our formulas — including Wild Desert Glow, Wild Mountain Glow, and Mocha Glow — are intentionally crafted with cold-pressed, low-comedogenic oils and butters such as jojoba, meadowfoam, argan, fractionated coconut, moringa, kokum butter, and mango butter.
These ingredients are widely regarded for their balanced absorption and skin compatibility. Jojoba closely resembles the skin's natural sebum, while meadowfoam and moringa are prized for their stability and antioxidant-rich profiles.
Our salves are suitable for facial use and are used daily by many customers — including our founder — even with acne-prone skin.
As with any new skincare product, patch testing is recommended for highly sensitive or reactive skin.
Can I use your salves on my face?
Yes. Our formulas are crafted with facial-safe, low-comedogenic oils and butters selected for their compatibility with delicate skin.
Wild Mountain Glow Salve and Wild Desert Glow Salve are used daily by many customers as facial moisturizers — including our founder, who formulates with acne-prone skin in mind.
Mocha Glow Salve was developed with the same facial-safe standards, featuring meadowfoam, argan, jojoba, and fractionated coconut oils. Its infusion of cacao, coffee, rooibos, and chocolate moringa provides antioxidant-rich botanical support, making it a beautiful option for skin that appears dull or fatigued.
As with any new skincare product, patch testing is recommended for highly sensitive or reactive skin.
Are your ingredients really wild-foraged and organic?
Yes — and this is one of the most important parts of what we do.
We hand-harvest prickly pear from spring through early fall and gather juniper berries in the fall before winter sets in. These wild Rocky Mountain botanicals are then slowly infused for a minimum of five weeks in cold-pressed organic oils.
Every formula begins with nutrient-dense carrier oils and thoughtfully sourced organic ingredients chosen for both integrity and performance.
You may notice that all of our salves include Madagascar vanilla beans infused in jojoba oil. This isn't just for the warm, natural aroma — vanilla is naturally rich in antioxidants and soothing plant compounds that support softness, glow, and skin comfort.
No fillers. No petroleum. No synthetic fragrance.
Is there historical significance behind prickly pear and juniper?
There is.
Prickly pear pads were traditionally used by Native peoples of the Southwest, including the Ute tribes of Colorado, for soothing sun-exposed skin and supporting wound care due to their hydrating, mucilage-rich properties.
Juniper berries have been used in various cultures for cleansing and topical applications, often valued for their natural antiseptic characteristics.
At Desert Glow Ranch, we honor these traditional botanicals through slow, modern apothecary preparation methods.
What is the shelf life?
Because our salves are anhydrous (water-free), they are naturally stable and long-lasting.
Most formulas are best enjoyed within 24–36 months when stored in a cool, dry place. Our original honey-based Wild Desert Glow has a shorter recommended use window of 9 months due to its traditional formulation.
For best quality, avoid introducing water into the tin and keep tightly sealed between uses.
Is it normal to see slight oil pooling or texture changes?
Yes. Because our salves are water-free and made without synthetic stabilizers or fillers, you may occasionally notice slight oil pooling or subtle texture changes — especially with temperature shifts or as the product is used.
This is completely normal and does not affect quality or performance.
Natural formulations behave naturally — and that's part of their integrity.
