Thinner air, thirstier skin
Elevation changes the physics around your skin in a few specific ways. UV exposure climbs fast — every 1,000 feet of elevation increases UV by roughly 5%, so at 5,000+ feet, your skin is absorbing about 25% more radiation than it would at sea level, and most sunscreens aren't tested for that. Humidity drops at the same time, so your skin loses water to the air around it faster than it can replace it, showing up as tightness, flaking, and redness. And lower atmospheric pressure means less oxygen reaching your skin cells, which slows repair cycles right when your barrier is already working overtime — something harsh winters make even worse.
Why your "normal" moisturizer isn't built for this
Most everyday moisturizers are water-based — 60 to 80% water by weight. In low-humidity, high-altitude air, that water evaporates fast, and it takes some of your skin's own natural moisture with it. So you end up reapplying constantly and somehow feeling drier than before you started. A moisturizer that's mostly water simply isn't built to hold up in air this dry.
And it's not only an altitude problem. Cold coastal climates deal with a version of the same thing — frigid, moisture-stripping wind and low humidity that pull hydration out of skin just as fast, even at sea level. What to use instead
Reach for waterless, occlusive-first formulas.
